Seizing the opportunities created by industrial ecosystem expansion during the 15th Five-Year Plan, Tianjin is leveraging its strong manufacturing base to further strengthen its industrial robotics industry. Today, let’s follow the reporter inside one of the city’s leading robotics companies and discover how a high-speed production-line “Spider Hand” has evolved through independent innovation into the waist of a humanoid robot, unlocking new possibilities for industrial applications.

The high-speed Spider Hand robots on the production line are primarily used for product sorting, achieving cycle rates of over 100 picks per minute with an accuracy of ±0.05 mm. Their core technologies—including motors and control algorithms—are entirely developed in-house. These robots are manufactured by ATOMROBOT.

Since last year, driven by industrial demand and building upon this proprietary technology, ATOMROBOT has achieved a major breakthrough in humanoid robot waist support technology.

By simply inverting the production-line Spider Hand, it transforms into the waist mechanism of a humanoid robot. The downward gripping force becomes upward supporting force, making it ideal for handling large components in industries such as automotive manufacturing.

As Tianjin accelerates its development into a national advanced manufacturing R&D hub, increasing numbers of local manufacturers are pursuing intelligent transformation. Addressing diverse industrial scenarios, ATOMROBOT combines its proprietary motion control algorithms with a strong local supply chain—including nearby partners capable of supplying key components such as precision reducers—to rapidly iterate and upgrade its products.

During the first half of this year, the company successively launched five embodied intelligent robots, including SkyBot and SkyRoam. Compared with conventional quadruped robots, the newly released inspection robot delivers higher speed and greater efficiency on flat surfaces, making it particularly well suited for industrial parks and factory campuses.

Driven by real-world application scenarios, Tianjin’s industrial robot sector continues to accelerate. In the first half of the year, the city’s industrial robot output increased by 35.4%.

In June, the Tianjin Municipal Science and Technology Bureau led visits to dozens of universities, research institutes, and key enterprises—including Nankai University, Tianjin University, and Hebei University of Technology—to map the city’s intelligent robotics ecosystem. The initiative identified three core technological modules—perception, decision-making, and execution—covering 18 specialized technical fields, resulting in the completion of Tianjin’s Intelligent Robotics Technology Innovation Roadmap.

Based on this roadmap, the Science and Technology Bureau is now actively connecting enterprises with universities across Tianjin to jointly tackle key technological challenges.

Through one such collaboration, Tianjin University of Technology has partnered with ATOMROBOT. During this summer, the university’s research team is using SkyBot as a development platform to optimize control algorithms, further improving positioning accuracy during high-payload material handling tasks.

According to the Tianjin New Industrialization 15th Five-Year Plan, the city will continue expanding industrial robot applications over the next five years into sectors including steel manufacturing, ports, and heavy machinery production. At the same time, Tianjin will accelerate the development of specialized robotic solutions—including welding robots and precision assembly robots—to meet the growing demands of industries such as aerospace and high-end equipment manufacturing.

By capitalizing on the opportunities presented by an expanding robotics ecosystem, Tianjin is steadily strengthening its robotics innovation value chain—and ATOMROBOT continues to play a leading role in this transformation.
